109 East Palace: Robert Oppenheimer and the Secret City of Los Alamos (2005)
Jennet Conant (Author)
109 East Palace: Robert Oppenheimer and the Secret City of Los Alamos by Jennet Conant discusses the people who lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and designed the atomic bomb in 1943. The physicists had to live in secret, adopt assumed names, and never let on to anyone why they were there. In their insular community, they developed close relationships, held wild parties, argued with each other, played pranks, and lived completely within their own small community--all while working to create the bomb that would end World War II. Many of the physicists had their families living there as well, and they had to adapt to the new environment. This book tells an often overlooked side of the story.
